SEOUL, South Korea, May 5, 2022 — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Magnachip”) (NYSE: MX) announced today that the company has surpassed 730 million units in cumulative shipments of organic light-emitting diode display driver integrated circuits (OLED DDICs) as of the end of the first quarter 2022.

Magnachip surpasses 730 million units in cumulative shipments of OLED DDICs
Magnachip surpasses 730 million units in cumulative shipments of OLED DDICs

Magnachip began OLED DDIC development in 2003 and commenced mass production of its first product in 2007. With 19 years of research and development history and a successful commercial track record, Magnachip has recently expanded its business area into new markets such as premium smartphones with foldable displays, automotive displays and high-end OLED TVs. As major smartphone, automotive and TV brands are using more OLED panels for their displays, the OLED DDIC market is expected to grow rapidly.

According to Omdia, a global market research firm, global OLED display panel shipments for smartphones and TVs will double from 2021 to 2028, while the shipments for automotive displays will grow 10 times in the same period. In total, global shipments of OLED display panels will increase from 804 million units in 2021 to 1.2 billion units in 2028, according to the market research firm.

“Congratulations to the entire Magnachip team for this impressive achievement, especially amid an ongoing foundry capacity shortage. Our success is based on the many years of technological innovation in our extensive OLED DDIC product portfolio,” said YJ Kim, CEO of Magnachip. “Looking forward, we will further solidify our technological and market leadership with high-performance DDIC products that will accommodate changing design requirements and empower technological transformation.”

Cision PR Newswire: news distribution, targeting and monitoring home     Magnachip Surpasses 730 Million Units in Cumulative Shipments of OLED DDICs

  • Revenue of $104.1 million was down 5.7% sequentially and down 15.4% year-over-year (YoY). The decrease was mainly due to a 29.3% sequential decline in Display solutions revenue as a result of continued severe supply shortage of 28nm 12″ OLED wafers, partially offset by record revenue in our Power solutions business, which was up 11.4% sequentially and 20.0% YoY on strong demand in premium products.
  • Gross profit margin was 37.5%, up 250 basis points from Q4 and up over 960 basis points from Q1 a year ago. The YoY increase was primarily attributable to an improved product mix, combined with an increase in average selling price under a favorable pricing environment.  Sequentially, Q1 benefited by approximately 200 basis points from the timing mismatch of lower cost 12″ wafers purchased in a prior period and sold in Q1.
  • GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS) was $0.20.
  • Non-GAAP diluted EPS was $0.28.

SEOUL, South KoreaMay 3, 2022 – Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: MX) (“Magnachip” or the “Company”) today announced financial results for the first quarter of 2022.

(PRNewsfoto/Magnachip Semiconductor)Commenting on the results for the first quarter of 2022, YJ Kim, Magnachip’s chief executive officer stated, “In Q1, we reported revenue of $104.1 million and non-GAAP EPS of 28 cents, which was an increase of 27% year-over-year bolstered by a strong gross profit margin.  As expected, OLED revenue remained severely impacted by the shortage of 28nm 12-inch wafer supply; however, this impact was somewhat offset by strength in our Power solutions business, which achieved yet another record quarterly revenue.”

YJ Kim continued, “Looking forward, the ongoing lockdowns in China has added new challenges to an already stressed supply chain. Despite the current macro issues, which may limit our near-term growth, our recent design tractions with an existing OLED customer, broadening customer base, and new wafer capacity later this year give us confidence and optimism about our long-term growth.”

(1) Following the consummation of the sale of the Foundry Services Group business and Fab 4 in Q3 2020, and for a period of up to three years, we will provide transitional foundry services to the buyer for foundry products manufactured in our fabrication facility located in Gumi (“Transitional Fab 3 Foundry Services”). Management believes that disclosing revenue of Transitional Fab 3 Foundry Services separately from the standard products business allows investors to better understand the results of our core standard products display solutions and power solutions businesses.
(2) For the three months ended December 31, 2021, operating income of $63.9 million included net gain of $49.4 million that represented $70.2 million income from the recognition of a reverse termination fee, net of professional service fees and expenses of $20.8 million incurred in connection with the contemplated merger transaction.
(3) Management believes that non-GAAP financial measures, when viewed in conjunction with GAAP results, can provide a meaningful understanding of the factors and trends affecting our business and operations and assist in evaluating our core operating performance. However, such non-GAAP financial measures have limitations and should not be considered as a substitute for net income (loss) or as a better indicator of our operating performance than measures that are presented in accordance with GAAP. A reconciliation of GAAP results to non-GAAP results is included in this press release.

Q2 2022 Financial Guidance
Our near-term outlook is still being challenged by persisting supply constraints, especially for 28nm 12″ wafers.  While actual results may vary, looking into the next quarter, Magnachip currently expects:

  • Revenue to be in the range of $100 million to $105 million, including about $9.5 million of Transitional Fab 3 Foundry Services.
  • Gross profit margin to be in the range of 33% to 35%.

Given concerns about global climate change and corresponding efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the Electric Vehicle (EV) market is projected to grow significantly. Omdia, a global market research firm estimates that the global EV market is expected to grow 27% annually between 2022 and 2025. As such, demand for high-efficiency and durable BLDC motors for EVs will increase and Medium Voltage (MV) MOSFETs are essential for BLDC motors to operate efficiently. Magnachip has developed a new 40V MOSFET featuring low RDS(on)* to reduce the conduction loss of automotive BLDC motors and the company began mass production of this new MOSFET in April 2022.

As reliable automotive semiconductors are critical to vehicle safety, the new 40V MOSFET is fully AEC-Q101 (Automotive Electronics Council-Q101) certified. The first application of this new product is for the Electric Water Pump of a new EV model from a global auto manufacturer. This MOSFET is also suitable for a variety of BLDC applications, such as electric oil pumps, engine cooling fans, electric power steering and battery cooling fans.

Magnachip continues to expand its market share in the automotive semiconductor sector with new products and advanced technology. Further, Magnachip is becoming a stable supplier of power semiconductor products as an integrated device manufacturer amid global supply chain disruptions affecting the automotive semiconductor industry, which is forecast to last through 2023.

“The market for both electric and internal combustion engines in the automotive sector is more competitive than ever and the demand for high-performance MV MOSFETs is increasing rapidly,” said YJ Kim, CEO of Magnachip. “Accordingly, we are strengthening our presence in global markets and believe the release of this new 40V MOSFET will help us to secure greater market share.”

Synchronous architecture of high-side and low-side switches achieves high efficiency

SEOUL, South Korea, March 15, 2022 — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Magnachip”) (NYSE: MX) announced today that the company has released a synchronous boost converter for a variety of applications, such as NAND flashes for SSDs, OLED panels and Bluetooth speakers.

Magnachip's high-performance synchronous boost converter for SSD NAND flashes

The new synchronous boost converter is equipped with a fast transient response to reduce output voltage fluctuations in a short response time for stable power supply. Therefore, the new product is ideally suited for devices, which can exhibit significant current variations.

The key feature of this newly released converter is a reduction in quiescent current of up to 1.5mA, as compared to the maximum 2mA of asynchronous boost converters currently on the market. Magnachip achieves this metric by the adoption of low-resistance high-side and low-side synchronous switches. Also, when a boost converter turns off, a built-in isolation switch prevents input voltage from being leaked through the output pin. And the soft-start time can be programmable by controlling the external capacitor and resistance values. This action reduces the in-rush current and ensures a stable power supply to external circuits.

This synchronous boost converter also provides strong circuit protection functions of overcurrent and overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, fast discharge function and under voltage lockout in a small Dual Flat No Leads package (DFN) of 2.5mm x 2.5mm. It operates at the switching frequency of 1.2MHz, so a small-sized 4.7µH inductor with low capacity can be connected externally. As a result, the size of printed circuit board (PCB) will be reduced as well.

In addition, its packaging technology meets halogen-free requirements and also complies with the Restriction of the Use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) – another example of Magnachip’s commitment to deliver environmentally-friendly and sustainable semiconductor products.

“In the last 10 years, Magnachip has developed a wide range of power solutions for TV, lighting, display panels, mobile and IT devices,” said YJ Kim, CEO of Magnachip. “Based upon our proven technological capabilities, we will continue to incorporate various features like bucks, boosts, multi-channels, op-amps and switch ICs into products and expand our next-generation product portfolio of integrated power management ICs.”

– GAAP gross profit margin for the fourth quarter was 35.0%, down 170 bps sequentially and up 810 bps YoY; Full-year GAAP gross profit margin of 32.4% was an increase of 710 bps YoY due mainly to improved product mix, increased average selling price, and a higher utilization rate.
– GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS) for the fourth quarter was $1.12; Full-year GAAP diluted EPS was $1.21.
– Non-GAAP diluted EPS for the fourth quarter was $0.31; Full-year non-GAAP diluted EPS was $1.09.
SEOUL, South Korea, Feb. 16, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: MX) (“Magnachip” or the “Company”) today announced financial results for the fourth quarter and full-year 2021.

Commenting on the results for the fourth quarter of 2021, YJ Kim, Magnachip’s chief executive officer stated, “For the fourth quarter, the demand and signals from our customers remained strong across the board. However, severe supply constraints continued to significantly limit our OLED revenue potential, which was partially offset by strong Power business. We reported $110.3 million in revenue and 31 cents in non-GAAP diluted EPS for the fourth quarter.”

Commenting on the full-year, YJ stated, “While our 2021 revenue was negatively impacted by continuing supply shortages, especially for 28nm 12″ OLED wafers, we delivered higher profitability in all of our key measures in 2021 compared to 2020. In addition, our team at Magnachip achieved critical milestones to fuel future growth; we broadened our customer base, further penetrated new applications, and enhanced our supply chain for additional manufacturing capacity, which is expected to come online in the later part of 2022. While our near-term outlook is still being challenged by persisting supply constraints, these developments reinforce our confidence and optimism about our long-term growth.”

(2)For the year ended December 31, 2021, operating income of $83.4 million included net gain of $35.5 million that represented $70.2 million income from the recognition of a reverse termination fee, net of professional service fees and expenses of $34.7 million incurred in connection with the contemplated merger transaction.

(3)For the year ended December 31,2020, net income of $345.0 million included income from discontinued operations, net of tax, of $287.9 million, primarily attributable to the recognition of $287.1 million as gain on sale of the Foundry Services Group business and Fab 4. It also included income tax benefits of $46.2 million, mainly attributable to the recognition of differences between GAAP and cash tax expense of $43.9 million.

(4)Non-GAAP financial measures are calculated based on the results from continuing operations. Management believes that non-GAAP financial measures, when viewed in conjunction with GAAP results, can provide a meaningful understanding of the factors and trends affecting our business and operations and assist in evaluating our core operating performance. However, such non-GAAP financial measures have limitations and should not be considered as a substitute for net income from continuing operations or as a better indicator of our operating performance than measures that are presented in accordance with GAAP. A reconciliation of GAAP results to non-GAAP results is included in this press release.

Q1 2022 Financial Guidance
Our near-term outlook is still being challenged by persisting supply constraints especially for 28nm 12″ wafers.  While actual results may vary, looking into the next quarter, which typically presents seasonal softness, Magnachip anticipates Q1 2022 to be the bottom and currently expects:

  • Revenue to be in the range of $102 million to $108 million, including about $9 million of the Transitional Fab 3 Foundry Services.
  • Gross profit margin to be in the range of 34.5% to 36.5%

SEOUL, South Korea, January 13, 2022 — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Magnachip”) (NYSE: MX) announced today that the company has launched 11 new generation high-voltage 600V Super Junction Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (SJ MOSFETs). The company has already released product samples and plans to begin mass production of them in March 2022.

The new 2.5th generation (2.5G) 600V SJ MOSFETs were developed using new designs based on the latest process technology to improve switching functionality by more than 10% compared to previous generations. As a result, Magnachip has achieved lower switching loss and better power efficiency. For applications requiring high Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) ruggedness, a Zener diode is embedded between a gate and source in order to avoid damage to a MOSFET from an external surge or ESD.

The new product family of 600V SJ MOSFETs supports an Rds(on) (drain-source on resistance) of 190~580mOhm and comes in standard packaging formats, such as DPAK, TO-220F and TO-220SF. Therefore, these new 2.5G products can be widely used in products and applications including TVs, lighting infrastructure, fast chargers, adapters, PC power and industrial power supplies. They are also well suited for hard- and soft-switching topologies.

Magnachip has been delivering high-performance MOSFETs for the last 10 years. Cumulative shipments have now reached 2 billion units since the release of its first SJ MOSFET in 2013. Magnachip has supplied its current flagship 600V SJ MOSFETs to the world’s largest TV manufacturers and solidified its competitive edge in the SJ MOSFET market. Recently, major Korean TV manufacturers have stimulated demand by releasing premium models and demand for MOSFETs is expected to increase significantly along with the growth of premium TV market.

“With industry-proven technologies and products, Magnachip has satisfied the latest design requirements for both consumer and industrial markets,” said YJ Kim, CEO of Magnachip. “We will continue to develop cutting-edge power solutions like high-voltage SJ MOSFETs for automotive to expand our product portfolio and bring new capabilities to more applications.”

Lower Rss(on) enables extremely fast battery charging

SEOUL, South Korea, January 12, 2022 — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Magnachip”) (NYSE: MX) announced today that the company has launched new generation Low-Voltage Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (LV MOSFETs) featuring lower Rss(on)* for battery Protection Circuit Modules (PCMs) in smartphones.

As demand for high-end 5G and LTE smartphones increases, extended battery life and strengthened protection features for batteries are becoming important. 5G phones, in particular, need long-lasting batteries with high endurance to process the large amount of data for fast download and upload. Magnachip developed the new generation LV MOSFETs with advanced overvoltage and overcurrent protection features to extend battery life and reduce overheating issues. Magnachip began mass production of this new 6.5th generation (6.5G) product last month and it is being used in a new 2022 flagship model from one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers.

The Rss(on) of this new 6.5G product is 20% lower than the previous version with the same chip size to reduce current loss and improve heat dissipation. This lower Rss(on) controls a high power density above 25W to prevent a battery from overheating and protect the PCM while the battery is being fast-charged. Also, PCM functionality has been greatly enhanced by an upgraded Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection diode. This diode mitigates a maximum of 2kV, based on the human-body model, of ESD to strengthen circuit protection and prevent damage to other smartphone components. Along with this powerful battery protection, the size of chip was significantly reduced to better meet the requirements of new smartphone models.

According to Omdia, a market research firm, the global smartphone market will grow 6.3%, with more than 1.4 billion units sold in 2022. The wireless earphone market is also rapidly growing, which will further drive up the demand for LV MOSFETs. Magnachip has sold more than 1.3 billion units of LV MOSFETs in the last 10 years and more than 900 million units of MOSFETs for battery PCMs. Leveraging its industry-leading technological know-how and business expertise, the company plans to reinforce its market leadership commensurate with the growth of the high-end 5G smartphone market.

“Despite the current global chip shortage, we are confident that we can maintain a strong supplier capability for our customers as an integrated device manufacturer for these new 6.5G products,” said YJ Kim, CEO of Magnachip. “We will continue to maintain a close rapport with our existing customers and expand our presence in the global market at the same time.”
